Line of the Day: June 3rd, 2011

SP Jason Vargas of the Seattle Mariners threw a four-hitter for the first complete game shutout of his career in a 7-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. He walked one and struck out four and raised his record on the season to 4-3.

Line: 9 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K; W, QS, CG, SHO

My fantasy perspective: Vargas is owned in less than 10% of all leagues (ESPN and Yahoo!) and is on pace for about a dozen wins in over 200 innings. There is fantasy value in those numbers but be weary of a low K/9 ratio of 5.8 and a high BB/9 ratio of 2.8. His seven quality starts in 12 games proves he deserves a better than 4-3 record, but the Mariners' offense is a notorious low-scoring one. Be ready to cut ties if things go south if you are one of the 10% who invested in him. I'd prefer to use the roster spot to stream pitchers and pick up Vargas in favorable match ups.

  1. Vargas is better than his record. He got off to a slow start. I think he's a keeper.
