Line of the Day: June 9th, 2011

SP Johnny Cueto of the Cincinnati Reds threw seven shutout innings of four-hit ball and struck out a season-high eight in a 3-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. He raised his record to 3-2 while lowering his ERA to 1.93 and WHIP to 1.03 for the season.

Line: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K; W, QS

My fantasy perspective: Cueto has put together quite a fine season in just seven starts. He's recorded a Quality Start in six of those seven games while holding opponents to a .207 BAA. His strikeout numbers continue trending downward from his rookie season high of 8.2 K/9 in 2008 (6.9 in 2009; 6.7 in 2010; 6.0 in 2011) but his H/9 (6.6) and BB/9 (2.7) are at career-low levels.

There are a couple of red flags to be aware of inside his 2011 numbers. Opponents have a very high 54.5 GB% against him which has lead to a very low BABIP of .230. Keep an eye on these numbers. A change in the opposite direction in either of these stats could have a significant change in the type of season he'll have the rest of the way.

He's owned in 97.3% of ESPN leagues but only 63% of Yahoo! leagues. Either they report their ownership rates differently or 37% of Yahoo! leagues are already worthless. You decide.
