Line of the Day: May 8th, 2011

SS Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees was 4-for-6 with two home runs in a 12-5 rout of the Texas Rangers. Jeter's two home runs were the first of the season and he also stole his first base. Add in three RBI and two runs scored and Jeter is finally showing signs of life at the top of the Yankees order.

Line: 6 AB, 2 R, 4 H, 3 RBI; 2 HR, SB

My fantasy perspective: Jeter has been taking his hits off the field from the media, fans and fantasy baseball pundits this season and could be finally showing signs of life. He's in the midst of a six-game hitting-streak in which he's now gone 11-for-28 (.393 BA) and raised his average up to .276 for the season. Only five of his hits have gone for extra bases (three doubles and two home runs) but three have come in his last two games. I'm not anointing him an MVP or even an All-Star but it sure would be nice to get top-10 shortstop production out of the aging Yankee legend.

Line of the Day: May 7th, 2011

SP Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers threw his second career no-hitter and the second in the majors this week, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 9-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. He threw 108 pitches (74 strikes), struck out four and walked one. The walk the J. P. Arencibia cost him a perfect game with one out in the eighth inning.

Line: 9 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K; W, QS, CG, SHO, No-Hitter

My fantasy perspective: Verlander continues to prove he's worth the early round investment (39.6 ESPN ADP; 56.5 Yahoo! ADP) year after year. He's now sporting a 55:18 K:BB ratio in 57 innings pitched with a 3.16 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. Batters are hitting just .187 off him too. I can't imagine any fantasy owners wanting to trade him, so if you missed out on draft day, you probably aren't going to own him in 2011. Better luck next season.

Line of the Day: May 6th, 2011

SP Jaime Garcia of the St. Louis Cardinals pitched 7 1/3 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Brewers and finished with a complete-game, two-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory. He struck out eight and walked just one while recording his third career complete game and third shutout.

Line: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K; W, QS, CG, SHO

My fantasy perspective: After a forgettable Spring Training in which he went 1-3 with a 6.26 ERA, 2.09 WHIP, allowed 40 hits and 25 runs in 23 innings, Garcia has rebounded nicely with a 4-0 record in seven starts. His 1.99 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, .205 BAA and 44:11 K:BB ratio prove that Spring stats are not a good measure of how a player might perform in the regular season. Owners able to get him at such a low ADP (193.7 ESPN; 187.1 Yahoo!) are looking at a steal for the value he's already returning. With Adam Wainwright out and Chris Carpenter struggling, is Garcia the Cardinals' new ace?

Line of the Day: May 5th, 2011

SP David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays allowed four hits and struck out 10 in 8 2/3 innings in a 3-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Price is now 8-0 with a 1.99 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in nine career starts against the Blue Jays.

Line: 8.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 10 K; W, QS

My fantasy perspective: Price continues to show why he's a serious threat to win a Cy Young Award sooner than later and fantasy owners who invested early (69.5 ESPN ADP; 57.8 Yahoo! ADP) in him as their fantasy ace. Price is only 4-3 this season but has a decision in all seven games started, pitching at least six innings in six of those starts. He's sporting a nice 40:9 K:BB ratio to go along with his 3.26 ERA and1.13 WHIP. The biggest concern to have is whether the Rays will produce enough offense this season (3.54 Run Support) to have him continue to factor into decisions.

Line of the Day: May 4th, 2011

OF Nate McLouth of the Atlanta Braves reached base in all eight of his plate appearances, going 5-for-5 a double, a two-run home run and three walks, in a doubleheader sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers. He had nine total bases and also scored four runs.

Line: 3 AB, 2 R, 3 H, 0 RBI; BB

Line: 2 AB, 2 R, 2 H, 2 RBI; HR, 2 BB

My fantasy perspective: McLouth came into the season on many "sleeper" lists but a slow start to the season got him dumped to the number eight spot in the batting order. Since then (12 games), he's batting .462 (18/39) with his only two home runs. There may be new life for him as an ownable outfielder in deeper mixed leagues or very shallow NL-only ones. He's only 8.2% owned in ESPN leagues and 7% owned in Yahoo! leagues, so there's plenty of time to see if he stays hot.
